HUMAN RIGHTS
Human rights are basic rights and freedoms that belong to each person in the world, from birth to death. They apply to each individual, regardless of his/her nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, religion, language or any other status. Human Rights are universal, interrelated, interdependent and indivisible.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the world's premier human rights instrument adopted by the United Nations in December 1948. Since then, Human Rights have evolved significantly and are now expressed and guaranteed by law, in the forms of treaties, customary international law, general principles and other sources of international law. In Mauritius, most of the fundamental rights and freedoms of the individual are guaranteed under the constitution.
One of the key tasks of the Human Rights Division is to prepare reports on Human Rights in line with State obligations.
