Hon. Maneesh Gobin, Minister of Justice, Human Rights and Institutional Reforms, attended the 40th Regular Session of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva on 14 and 15 March 2019 where the Universal Periodic Report (UPR) of Mauritius was approved.

 

In his statement, the Hon. Minister expressed his appreciation to Member States for their participation, constructive recommendations and recognition of the progress achieved by Mauritius so far. He also stressed on our holistic approach to the UPR process and reported on the 133 out of 176 recommendations that we have accepted for implementation. Furthermore, he explained to the Council the various challenges faced by Mauritius including its small size, dense population, the limited resources and the delicate social fabric, and the reasons as to why we are not proposing to adhere to some of the recommendations.

·         Mr Sanjoy Hazarika, Director Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative​
