Brief on Launching of the National Human Rights Action Plan Progress Report 2012-2020

The National Human Rights Action Plan Progress Report 2012-2020 was launched on 09 December 2021 by the Hon. A. Ganoo, Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade at the Caudan Arts Centre, in Port-Louis.

Being launched in the context of the International Human Rights Day 2021, which is commemorated on 10 December of each year, this report testifies the achievements and progress of the country as regards human rights while recalling Government's endeavour to promote and protect human rights in Mauritius.

As a whole, the document provides an overview of the legislations enacted to domesticate Human Rights treaties in Mauritius, measures taken to strengthen the administration of justice, improve rule of law, and ensure the independence of the judiciary, and enhance practices on the part of law enforcement authorities, and what has been achieved on the Human Rights landscape for the given period. It mainly highlights the main achievements of the Republic of Mauritius under 11 objectives and 100 priority actions which emanate from the recommendations of the various treaty bodies that Mauritius is a party to and which were previously reviewed.

This document puts emphasis on the fact that the Government of Mauritius has been able to implement at least 90 % of the measures highlighted, be it at different stages and will be a valuable reference for all those interested in human rights, be it students, members of general public, legal profession, NGOs, and the civil society at large.

The Progress Report will also help track progress, improve required areas, and move in the right direction. It will be a useful point of reference for Human Rights Practitioners.

The event was attended by representatives of Ministries and Departments, Non-governmental Organisations, Civil Society, National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) and Diplomatic Corps.

The Progress Report was then distributed to all Ministries and Departments, NHRIs, Embassies, Permanent Missions, Honorary Consulates, Consulates and other relevant stakeholders.
